LX9 with bigger FPGA?

Hello all,

would it be possible to replace the FPGA on the LX9 MicroBoard with a bigger one with the same CSG324 package like XC6SLX25 or would it be likely to get problems with the power supply, config flash, USB-JTAG or other?

Kind regards

Well power could certainly be a problem, from a FPGA only standpoint, you could run Xilinx's Power Estimator (XPE)
tools.   In the CSG324 package you could go all the way up to a LX45, but I doubt the boards power supply
could power that.   If only jumping to the LX16, its possible, but depends on your application and speed.

You can take your MAP results and use that as the basis for power consumption for the LX9. Then just change
the density to the LX16 to see how much it increases power.   The TPS65708 is rated to deliver 400mA on the
3.3V and 1.8V rails..   160mA on the 1.2V rails.

If you make the jump, please let us know how it goes.

Thanks, Jayson

Re: LX9 with bigger FPGA?

Hello all,

now I've got my brand new LX16 Microboard;-) After having swapped the Spartan chip (cost: 50 €) I had some trouble verifiying that the board still is o.k.

Of course the LX9-bitfiles did no longer run and my first try to build microblaze failed because there was no board descriptin available. After copying and editing the files in /opt/Xilinx/13.2/ISE_DS/EDK/board/Avnet/boards/Avnet_S6LX9_MicroBoard_RevB and /opt/Xilinx/13.2/ISE_DS/EDK/board/Avnet/ipxact/S6_MicroBoard_v1_0 I was able to select the "new" board in ISE and build Microblaze according to the tutorials. I ran the memory and peripherial tests provided within the SDK with no problams.

Next task is to get Linux running from Flash.

Kind regards

Now everything runs very good.

Is there any chance that Avnet adds a LX16 chip as an option for the Microboard?

Kind regards

Re: LX9 with bigger FPGA?

Yes please!!!!!!!!

All I want is to run linux with ethernet, uart and spi and iic wired to the pmod connectors.

CAN'T DO IT!!!

Wasting time fiddling with settings that don't help.

lx9 not big enough.

Please make microboards with a LX16 on them.

Thank You.

Hi thombus,

I agree that MicroBlaze users may quickly find themselves running out of resources on the LX9 device when adding additional hardware to the embedded platform.  However, in order to make the MicroBoard an affordable board, we needed to be cost conscious on the device selection during design.

I just wanted to point out that we do offer a Spartan-6 LX16 Eval Board that has quite a few more features than the LX9 MicroBoard.

http://www.em.avnet.com/spartan6lx16-evl

Of course, more features usually means higher cost and this board is no exception.  Also, in switching to the Spartan-6 LX16 Eval board, you would be changing your platform form factor, but you keep a lot of the embedded features such as Pmods, Flash config memory, DDR SDRAM memory, and Ethernet capability.

If you need to keep the MicroBoard form factor for your application, another option would be to swap devices like relinux did above.  Again, this has an added cost factor to it since you would need to purchase the larger density device and find a rework shop who is capable of swapping the BGA devices for you.  Also, there is some risk involved in doing this since it would void your MicroBoard warrenty plus there is the possiblity that swapping devices is not as successful as relinux found it to be.

The LX9 MicroBoard is a board design that just turned two years old and it is with the older generation of devices.  As a result, I doubt that we would ever come out with a supported LX16 version of the MicroBoard.

One more thing that I wanted to point out...  If you are serious about running Linux on a board that has programmable logic capability, please allow me to suggest our more recent ZedBoard.  Again, a board with higher cost but A LOT more functionality, a hard ARM Cortex-A9 MP core, a ton of community support, plus we had Linux running on it the 2nd week we got prototype boards back!
